I think a globe can be something other than a representation of the planet.

“1. A round or spherical body, solid or hollow; a body whose surface is in every part equidistant from the center; a ball; a sphere. [1913 Webster]”

“2. Anything which is nearly spherical or globular in shape; as, the globe of the eye; the globe of a lamp. [1913 Webster]”

Maybe it is a crystal ball?

The Greeks and Romans knew the Earth was round and that it had a circumference of 25,000 miles. Then the Xian church destroyed science. That was the Dark Ages.

The Dark Ages descended upon Europe due to the collapse of the Roman Empire.

Being so far from the heart of the Empire, the Irish Christian monks managed to preserve the arts of writing (and science) and reintroduced these things back into Europe, inspiring the slow climb out of the Dark Ages.

Its a Farnese Globe. A Farnese Globe is a map of the stars as seen from earth.

Mind in that age it was thought that the earth was the center of the universe and that the heavens were a sphere with all the stars being on the 'inside' of the sphere. One can watch the stars 'turn' around the earth, they remain stationary relative to one another.

Planets, moon and sun were different, residing someplace between the celestial 'sphere' of stars and earth.

Farnese Globes were solid with the map of the visible stars on the outside of the sphere.

I never thought about it until I saw that coin. You always see paintings of old rulers holding a scepter and orb, and I heard that the orb had something to do with "having the world in your hands."

But this would mean that pre-Columbian leaders thought the Earth was round. What gives???

Anyway, here's Wikipedia to the rescue.

That's an old myth, i believe it comes from an 19th Century novel about Columbus and people as usual taking fiction as fact.

No, they did not think the earth was flat. Neither did columbus. It is what you been taught. It was a superstition held be the educated. Just so ya know, Columbus had world maps.

On top of that, the chinese had been sailing the globe long before the British knew it could be done. The knowledge taught in schools comes from the British dark ages only.
