Re: Beverly Hills, Los Angeles banning declawing of cats!
I'm for less laws and not more but I must say that declawing cats is horrible and cruel.
Our cat was rescued from the humane society. Poor dear had been declawed. They not only need their claws for defense but for balance as well. She has been maimed and is handicapped for life. She will never be able to roam freely outside.
If you don't like their claws - don't own a cat!!!! ""He who seeks will not give up until he finds; and having found, he will marvel; and having marveled, he will reign; and having reigned, he will rest." - The Gospel of the Hebrews
" 19I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them;
20And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God."

Interesting point, but......I don't see why it shouldn't be up to the individual owner as to how they want to do things. I can see where you're coming from though.
The part about the state being able to regulate veterinary medicine, is creepy though.

Rather than more laws, maybe shedding some light on the practice and expose the disreputable vets that make money off of maiming animals. We declawed our first cat, but after that we said we'd never do that again. Sure I get scratched every day, but I don't mind it that much. It just gives me an excuse to experiment on homemade remedies for cuts and scrapes.
However, it was my choice on whether or not to decide to declaw my cats, and that's what this country was founded on (choice). If I wanted someone to tell me how to raise my children and pets and how many of each I can have, I'd move to China. *Slayer of Trolls*

Re: Beverly Hills, Los Angeles banning declawing of cats!
I'm not a cat lover by any means, but de-clawing cats is cruel.
You might be a good pet owner, OP, but many aren't. Cats are VERY OFTEN abandoned when people move, etc. and then what happens to those poor de-clawed kitties?

Re: Beverly Hills, Los Angeles banning declawing of cats!
To declaw a cat they have to cut off the last digits of all of their fingers and toes if you are doing the back claws also, this can lead to many health problems for the cat, sometimes right away, sometimes later in life, which include infection, not being able to walk and increased serious accidents caused by falling. Cats use their claws to keep their balance allot, they lose their balance more when there claws are gone and having shorter toes also increases chance for injury as per accidents.
It is painful and takes many years to heal sometimes it never does and the cat becomes crippled for life and in pain.
I think all states should completely ban the declawing of cats.

This isn't ridiculous, yet. Wait till they start telling people how many pets they are allowed to have, etc. etc.
I also disagree with de-clawing. A cat's claws can be kept trimmed. That helps.

Yes, no reputable vet would do this, and if a person enquires, the pet should be taken from them.

Re: Beverly Hills, Los Angeles banning declawing of cats!
my cat is declawed.
she was a stray abandoned kitten that i took in.
i live in a small town full of roaming cats and dogs...lots of disease and pests a kitty can get.
i have kept my cat inside her entire time with me...now 3 years.
she was very ill when i found her, and my vet did an amazing job helping me heal her.
just after spaying her, she began destroying my screens and my skin with her antics/claws !
my vet explained declawing and i only had her front feet done.
i took good care of her afterwards, so, no infection.
she is now a happy, healthy cat who loves to window sit and watch the squirrels and birds !
it works for her and for me.
she still loves to play attack with me...but, no more damage to my skin and she thinks she 'wins' !
a law to prevent declawing ?
that is one law too many; imho.

Re: Beverly Hills, Los Angeles banning declawing of cats!
Declawing is cruel and inhumane. And yeah, states have a right to ban this cruel practice. It has nothing to do w/how you 'raise' your kids- no comparison unless you think you should be allowed to selectively amputate their body parts.
States rights. If the people support the ban then it's their right to do so. I wish they'd pass one here.
www.softpaws.com if you kitty scratches too much. Or, don't get a cat.

As a cat owner for 20+ years, I can tell you that declawing is not as simple as removing the claw itself. The process involves removing the last knuckle of the paw where the claw is located. In short, amputation. Yes, it is cruel.

it is also cruel to try and teach a cat NOT to scratch you !
you wind up tense and the cat is punished for something they do naturally.
my cat thinks she has claws.
the vet did a superb job.
she and i get along wonderfully now.
my vet also asked if she was gong to stay an inside cat.
i assured him yes.
she has no fleas or worms.
again, my town is full of strays.
in fact, my neighbor rescued this kitty as she was being attacked by a loose dog.
she brought the kitty to me...since, i had just lost my other cat of 14 years.

After having furniture destroyed by a previous cat, when we got our little gal, as a six week old kitten, she was declawed (front feet only)at the same time as we had her spayed.
She celebrated her 20th b'day last summer, and she is still doing fine. Actually quite kittenish at times.
She does go outside in our back yard, almost every day. She hangs around with our dog, and if he barks, she heads for the door. We always have her in at night.
Would I do it again?? I am not sure. We did have a kitty for three years (killed by a rattlesnake) who was not declawed, but she didn't ruin the furniture.
A fdriend of mine has had six cats, all declawed. None of them have had infections. My cat still goes up to a tree, and scratches like she had claws, and she was able to get up the tree for years, until it got too large for her to hug as she ran up it.

I used to argue with my mother-in-law when my children were born about declawing my cat. She thought I was the worst mother in the world. Cat claws can't kill a child and if my kids are messing with my cat, they deserve what they get.
