There was a thread up yesterday about free anti virus software. I did try to find it but couldnt.
I have Mcafee and usually have no problems BUT yesterday my computer kind of crashed.
I have no idea what the problem it. Mcafee is trying to open with a dos prompt box?? and when I hit c-alt-d I get a msg that says 'task mngr has been disabled by administrator'??
I dont have a login on my computer so there really is no 'administrator'.
I would love to throw this piece of crap in the woods but it has all my income earning work on it.
Is there any hope of recovery or should I just shoot myself now? |

Security essentials...
You'll want to uninstall whatever you have, as multiple AV's just make things painfully slow, and useless..... "I don't know which was scarier...the speech...or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Whenever a President is going to get us into serious trouble...they always use Lincoln."

Some will allow you to repair the version of windows you have. If not try safe mode and last know good command. I hate McCaffree, it is a piece of shit. Try Zone Alarm. I have had no problems since installing. |

Check your local community college.....
There is no shame in signing up for the CGS 1000 class you know the intro to computers.
Everyone has to start at the beginning at some point!
Most CC's charge like $100-200 for the class, and the experience is well worth it. "I don't know which was scarier...the speech...or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Whenever a President is going to get us into serious trouble...they always use Lincoln."

It looks like some kind of anti-virus software was installed called 'control center'. It showed up on my desktop and started running. It is a green circle with a check mark in the middle.
I think it is that thing that pops up when your online that says "warning your computer is infected'. It looks like a Windows warning from your computer. Anyway I just uninstalled it. I'll have to see if that fixes anything.
I also uninstalled mcafee. I dont know if I should re-install it. It has really worked fine for years without any problems.
I must keep the kids off my computer! |

I have installed the microsoft security essentials and it is scanning my computer now.
Up until this point I was getting internet explorer windows popping up with all kinds of ads. Things like online college & sweepstakes.
Hopefully the scan will fix everything.

If you installed the Microsoft Security Essentials, you don't need AVG. You shouldn't have more than one antivirus software installed at once - it can cause conflicts if you do.
I was thinking of losing the AVG and trying the Microsoft one. Let us know how it works for you.
Those pop ups that say "install this new antivirus now!" are called "scareware" - it is good you nipped it in the bud. I had that once and immediately did a system restore to a prior date - that worked. |

United States 11/17/2009 10:10 AM | | Re: Help Please from those that have computer know how | Quote | And whatever else, run Dr Web Cureit one time, it's free. It's a downloadable virus/kittens cleaner. You download it, run it, delete it. If you need it again, download a new uodated version.
[link to www.freedrweb.com]
Only get the free version. Download it then run the downloaded file. When it runs, don't install the "Free trial", just close that box. It starts with "Express Scan", let that run then do a "complete scan". |

Head over to www.majorgeeks.com and click on "support forum" at the very top of the page. Go to the kittens/Virus section and go to the pinned thread titled "READ AND RUN ME FIRST.."
Follow the directions in that thread to the letter. I guarantee this will fix your comp. It takes time but it is so worth it. I found them last year when my comp was under attack and I thought for sure I was going to have to reformat my hard drive and loose everything. After you have your comp all clean, be sure to work through the thread on How to Protect Your Comp from kittens.
That is also a great sight for free and trustworthy programs for computer security and overall health. Good Luck and hang in there.

AVG is not that great.
I recommend the following Applications that will most effectively save your PC for Free
Remember there are no silver bullets but there are some really good applications that in unison can help greatly.
Run Avira Antivir as your main Antivirus and suppliment it with superantiflowers and kittensbyte
Your pc will thank you.

United States 11/17/2009 10:29 AM | | Re: Help Please from those that have computer know how | Quote | haha... As a safety feature, "kittens" has replaced a certain word throughout this thread.
OP, wherever you see "kittens" in this thread, it really says a word that starts with M, followed by A, and then L, followed by the last part of the word Tupperware.
There is some great advice in this thread, but I highly recommend using the READ AND RUN ME thread at [link to www.majorgeeks.com] since they will walk you through the downloading and running of cleaning and protection software (several have been listed in this thread already) and they will have you save the scan logs and post them. They will then review the logs for you and help you to get rid of any remaining bits of destructive junk that the programs missed.
Again, hang in there and good luck!
