Mathetes, I got an email from a Ukrainian friend this morn regarding the flu-scare in Ukraine. The English is so-so, but here it is verbatim:

"Hi!

It's all right with my family and I. I don't think situation is really dangerous. There are just politician games, politics are very unfear in our country and juornalists too.
But I have three days off from tomorrow ( working at home to be honest) because my chief if scared)))))
Thank you for you care."

Yep certainly do
Young female age about 35-37, 3 kids over weight,
BOA teller here in Tequesta Fl.

I know of other cases here in Jupiter.

Considering the Flu kills about 30K -40K the numbers are not surprising.

What is surprising is, who is dying. Your middle aged people and very young children.

Really the safest thing is to catch it now in its milder state before it should mutate.

yes it is being blown out of proportion,

Didn't I read where they are labeling every type of flu as Swine flu now?

Yes they are.
Little girl in South Bend Indiana was claimed to have died from H1N1 by the M.E. after autopsy.
A relative is a nurse at the hospital they took the girl too initially. It wasn't swine flu. If I recall she had an underlying heart condition. No one could deny the M.E. verdict though.

If anything, H1N1 exacerbates other conditions, much like AIDS does.

The Palm Beach and Martin Counties stopped confirming swine flu back in the summer. If you test positive for the Flu then assume H1N1 is what County health departments have been telling Dr. and Clinics .

Re: Does anyone know anybody that has died from Swine flu?Quote

A distant friend I know has passed away form it,female mid 50s

I also have a friend I grew up that is very, very sick with and in the hospital the last 10 days...but he almost doesn't count because all of his other health probs heart transplant etc
 Quoting: mathetes

Hey Mathetes...not trying to bust your balls and my sympathies to your friend but was her passing confirmed to have been from H1N1? The reason why I ask is that after 3 confirmed cases an institution will typically not test. From that point after, everyone displaying symptoms of a flu like illness is AUTOMATICALLY considered to have H1N1.

Re: Does anyone know anybody that has died from Swine flu?Quote

Daughter thinks she had it this Spring. She didn't seek medical attention but said that she was so sick that she wanted to die. Doubt that, but you know the expression. Heh.

I do remember over the years having various nasty cases of the flu that felt like death would be a good option.

I've been getting the annual preventative shot for about ten years now and haven't had the flu since. Probably have a lot of good antibodies built up over the years.

My immnune system isn't compromised as far as I know and I also eat healthy foods (most of the time) and take supplements.

I took my annual regular flu shot last month but am going to pass on the H1N1 vaccine until I can see more clearly what it's all about.

Husband has to have it because of his job. We tease him that he is our guinea pig test subject.

Hope that just stays a family joke and not for real!

Re: Does anyone know anybody that has died from Swine flu?Quote

Yes, I know an 11 year old boy who died of the Swine Flu in September. He was otherwise healthy and died after only having the flu for two days and beind in the hospital for one. His family has a restaurant two blocks from where I live.

Four have died in my county. The vaccine just arrived this week or so they say it has. Don't know anybody who has actually received it. They allotted us 200K doses for 5 million people so only healthcare workers and kids will have any vaccine.

I am not getting the vaccine as I am over fifty and so think I have some natural immunity from the last round of Swine flu in 70's as I had it then or Hong Kong flu one. I think it is too late to take vaccines and this one seems to have been rushed through without adequate testing anyway.

Anyway, the little boy's death was verified by the State Lab and CDC both since a death involved so it was definitely Swine Flu.

I don't have a strong opinion on whether or not people should take the vaccine but think each should decide that for themselves. As I said, I am skipping it because they don't seem to be very competent in the way it has been manufactured and dsitributed.

But I don't think the death count is exaggerated as we are a small county of about 50K and 4 deaths with 33 state wide. And too many to count are sick with flu and/or colds.

I don't know a single person who has even contracted it.

That was my point of the thread....its overhyped

So the anonymous coward says I am lying, or that I am a shill? Which is it?

Thanks for the laugh..

On a serious note- I do not know anyone who has gotten H1N1, nor have I heard any stories from people I know, about people they know.

I'm NOT saying it's not out there- but getting a vaccine for such a small threat seems to me like wearing a helmet whilst driving a car. You can hope the helmet might save you, but it just might end up killing you too (limited field of vision).
