Song lyrics...when you think you hear something different
Quote

This is a thread dedicated to those of us sorry people who sing along to songs, only to find out much later that we were singing completely the wrong words, all along.

In some cases, I have gone for years singing the wrong words to a song, until the advent of the internet, when I was able to look up the lyrics and find, to my shame, that I had been making a fool of myself all along.

When I was a teenager, I had a girlfriend who was convinced that the song from Grease entitled 'You're the one that I want' started with the words,

"I got shoes, they're multiplying."

lmao

A friend thought Jimi Hendrix was gay and I asked what makes you think that and he said well how about that song where he says, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy".

Waiting, on a sunday afternoon
for what I read between the lie-ies
Your lie-ies
Feelin', Like a ham and mustard shake..
So do you laugh or do you cry-ie
Reply-ie

leading, on a sophomore train...
only yesterday, you lie-ie-ied..
promises, of what I said to beat
only watched the ties, goodbye-ie-ie
all the things, that I sent to you.

The song didn't make much more sense when I read the real lyrics

I thought that in Penny Lane the pretty nurse was selling puppies from a train.

When I saw the video I realized it was poppies.

"Just call me Angel of the Morning
Just cross my feet before you leave me. . ."

And my poor addled spouse's shout at the beginnning of that old disco fave, The Hustle:

"Tuna Hotdog!"

Another of his mishearings was "Guantanamera" He sang it, "One ton o' sparrows."

There's a name for these - Mondegreens.

Came from the mishearing of an old English folk song which went "They slayed Lord Someone-or-other and laid him on the green."

Google "Mondegreens" for further self-embarrassed laffs.

Thanks.
