I used to have a few choice places in the town where I used to live, two of them were football / soccer pitches.

I haven't found any in this town yet, but have just recently made a new friend who says she knows where to find them.

Remember to leave the ones with their cups still closed and pick only the ones that have shed their spores.. so the next troupe of pickers have a wee harvest too.

That's one weird looking mushroom, even in mushroom terms.

Can't say I've ever seen those growing here in Scotland

Re: Mushroom seasonQuote

I have been an amateur mycologist for over 20 years, and have identified and safely eaten a number of different mushrooms. However, I have never been able to find and identify sillies. :(. I have heard that they put a spore killer in cattle feed now so it does not grow on the dung. I think I need someone in the know to take me out and show me some sillies, and then I would be on my way - if you get my meaning.

There was this show this morning on local public tv called "Cultivating Life" and this particular show was all about edible mushrooms. They visited a couple of commercial growing operations. It was very cool. You can buy a loaf of material that will produce a nice supply of mushrooms for the kitchen. I am looking for links.

Here's a great Morel web site (in fact that's the sites
name) with a good sighting chart:

As for the UK here's a site I found about Morels there:
[link to www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk]
It seems that they do grow there.

They're kind of mainly dark brown colour, with a nipply bit on the peak, which is darker.

There's another variety that grow round here which you can quite easily mistake for psilocybin 'shrooms if you haven't picked since last year, but they have visible ribs/veins that go from the peak down the the edge of the cup. They have a less noticeable nipple- if at all- and the cup gets more translucent towards the bottom where you can spot the ribs/veins.

Pscilocybin mushrooms don't have those ribs/veins.

[link to www.talktofrank.com]

^These ones are DRIED, and therefore paler than they look when ripe for picking.

Imagine them darker and slimier, with a bit more body.
Oh yeah, and without wrinkles.

If there's been precipitation recently, they'll have the dark, slimy look I mentioned.

But if they've been undisturbed by rain [or humans], and have been subject to sunlight for a day or so, they may be a paler, coffee-cream colour.

S**t, I should have thought of that earlier.

Yeah, I read Dr. P's link, and some of the links on the link, and apparently, the do grow in the U.K., but mainly in certain areas of England.

Looks like May is the time for Morels in the U.K. too, so different species flourish at their own time of year it seems.

Well I went out in the woods for a while. It is very dry. Hasn't rained in nearly a month. I found some nice oysters, one dried up chantarelle, and a yellow agaric. But no sillies. I think I will wait for a rain and spend some time in the river bottoms. Wish me luck.

Re: Mushroom seasonQuote

BTW, Celtic, one of the best New Year's Eves of my life was in a little town in the Borders region of Scotland. We ditched a party of hippies at a sheep farm in the hills and ended up at a butcher's house in Galashiels(sp) or Melrose, or somethin' like that. Don't remember the town, it was 30 years ago. That is some mighty fine country around there and the townfolk were a blast to party with.
